Summary of the History of Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation

 

2003

November – Jeff Cornish begins to forms idea of working with or creating a junior golf program.

2004

January – Jeff Cornish applies for the Executive Director opening for The First Tee of Greater Seattle.  He is told he was “runner-up” for the job.  He decides to form a junior charity golf program in Snohomish County.

February – Jeff Cornish meets Todd Tibke at Lobo Ridge Golf Course to discuss a junior program.  Todd agrees to be a part of the project and that Lobo Ridge is a good fit.  (At the time the course is owned by George Thoreson with Todd as the caretaker.)

Spring

Jeff Cornish begins to complete IRS filing paperwork.

May – the initial “organizing meeting” for Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation is held on May 4, 2004.  In attendance are Todd Tibke, Jim Toomey, John Brandvold, Mark Johnson, George Thoreson, and Jeff Cornish.

June – The application is filed after Jeff Cornish and Todd conduct a successful fundraiser for the $500 filing fee of the 501c3 application. 

June – Grand Opening of Grass Root Jr. Golf program at Lobo Ridge Golf Course was on June 12, 2004.

Summer

Charity  conducts programs hiring John Brandvold, PGA, for content.  The program serves over 100 youth.

The First Tee  and Grass Roots JR. Golf begin to discuss licensing a The First Tee Chapter.

September – The IRS approves Grass Root Jr. Golf application for 501c3 status and assigns ID # 90-0179136 on September 22, 2004.

Jeff Cornish leads the organization through The First Tee chapter licensing process.

2005

April –Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation is approved as a licensed chapter named The First Tee of Snohomish County.  The First Tee is in Phase 3 of its Strategic Plan and looking to expanding the number of chapters.   The First Tee of Snohomish County is the 127th chapter formed.

Charity gets “start up grant” guaranteed money from The First Tee national. (2 years, $20K per year).

Jeff Cornish attends The First Tee Coach Level 1 training in Houston.

March – Board agrees to pay Thoreson $36,000 flat fee for unrestricted use of Lobo Ridge.

GRGF serves over 200 students with programming. GRGF partners with local Boys and Girls Club, Snohomish County Parks and Recreation, and YMCA.

Summer

July – Fundraising tournament at Snohomish Golf Course, with dinner at Lobo Ridge Golf Course. Event raised a net total of $2,000.

August – Corstone selects charity as beneficiary of their annual tournament.

October -  George Thoreson gives Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation first right of refusal to buy Logo Ridge for $900k on October 26, 2005.  The developer Barkley’s North wants to buy the 12 acres for 4 mega-homes.

October – Jeff Cornish and Mike Coombs form an LLC to try to sell real estate shares to the neighbors of Lobo to save the course from development on October 28, 2005. 

November –  Lobo Ridge neighboring home owners meeting was held on November 10, 2005.  There was not enough support to raise the shares needed to save the golf course from being developed.

December – Jeff Cornish begins to reach out to Dan Smith at Lynnwood Golf Course.  TFT requires each chapter to have a “chapter home site” agreement (15 years with minimum access program hours).  Dan agrees for Jeff Cornish to prepare proposal to Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Dept. Supervisor and City Council.

2006 

Winter

January – Jeff Cornish attends USGA PEAK conference in Colorado.

February – Jeff Cornish attends TFT Network Meeting at TFT in Jacksonville, Florida.  At this meeting he completes the TFT Executive Director Level 1 training.  Board members Bill Ciao and Dave Reynaud also attend the meeting on Friday and the gala on Saturday night.

February – City of Lynnwood approves agreement for chapter site.

Spring

Grass Roots Jr. Golf  gets a $2,000 grant from Tulalip Tribes to conduct programming with their tribal kids.

The First Tee Snohomish Country gets a $5,000 Nicklaus teaching grant.

Programming commences at Lynnwood GC, Blue Boy GC, Salem Wood Elementary School, and Choice Turf Driving Range with the following coaches: Dan Smith, John Brandvold, Bill Ciao, Diana Hoy, Sandy Ely, Betty Russell, Dave Reynaud, and Dale Wallin. 

Dan Smith and Dave Reynaud commence with the The First Tee coach training program.

April – Jeff Cornish joins Everett Rotary Club.

May – Jeff Cornish completes The First Tee Coach Level 2 training in St. Augustine, Florida.

Summer

June – Fundraising Tournament at Kayak Point Golf Course raised a net total of $3,000.

Fall

September – Jeff Cornish completes The First Tee Executive Director Level 2 training in Houston, Texas.

Winter

Vaughan Siefert becomes an “advisor” to Jeff Cornish regarding Grass Roots Jr. Golf.

Jeff Cornish goes off the Board to become a paid Executive Director.  Angie Smith hired as PT bookkeeper.

Winter

February – GRGF rents office space in downtown Everett.

March – USGA approves player voucher grant.

Spring

April – Jeff Cornish completes TFT Coach Training Level 3 in Reno, Nevada.

May – GRGF/TFTSC launches new Buick car raffle as fundraiser.

Summer

June – Fundraising Tournament at Kayak Point Golf Course raised a net total of $9,595.

June – Nardone Construction selects charity as beneficiary to their customer golf tournament on June 15, 2007.

June – Dale Wallin attends The First Tee coaching Level 1 training in San Diego.

The First Tee introduces Dept. of Defense grant program for Military Affiliate Program.  Since The First Tee Snohomish County is the only northwest chapter with bases in their service area, we agree to serve military family youth and begin programming at Everett and Whidbey Naval Station. Tom Perry assists with coaching in Oak Harbor.

August – Jeff Cornish takes raffle car to Olympia The First Tee Ball Drop on August 18, 2007.

August 31 – Grass Roots Jr. Golf car raffle participates in TFT Seattle tournament at Snoqualmie TPC.

Fall

September – Jeff Cornish attends Regional The First Tee meeting in Las Vegas; completes Executive Director Level 3 training.

GRGF enters an agreement with Barkley’s North to help maintain the new Monroe Golf Course.

Winter

November – The First Tee National Meeting is held in San Jose.  Jeff Cornish helps as presenter, and receives certification as The First Tee Nationally  Recognized Coach and The First Tee Nationally  Recognized Executive Director.  (He becomes, at that time, one of only 7 people in the entire National Network with both distinctions.)

December – 2007 Buick Raffle Drawing.  Winner chose $25K cash leaving Grass Roots Jr. Golf the car.  Plan is to sell the car at auction Feb. 22, 2008.

Winter

Program year – Jeff Cornish partners with Choice Turf Driving range, renting access and storage for $200 per month and negotiating preferred rates for access and buckets.  The First Tee Snohomish County conducts program there several days per week.

March – GRGF partners with Seattle Golf Show to do a “youth activity area” in exchange for free booth.

Summer

Program year – Jeff Cornish partners with Choice Turf Driving range, renting program storage there for $200 per month and negotiating preferred rates for access and buckets.  TFTSC conducts program there several days per week.

June – Nardone Construction again chooses charity as beneficiary of their event.  The total net donation to GRGF is $3,000.

June – Dan Smith completes The First Tee Level 2 coach training.

July – Fundraising Tournament at Kayak Point Golf Course raised a net total of $7,620.

GRGF conducts programming at Legion Memorial with agreement with City of Everett.

Jeff Cornish conducts various “KP for Kids” events at local courses.

Jeff Cornish and Dave Reynaud offer outreach programming to Greater Trinity Academy students at Walter Hall.

Fall

September – WALMART donates $10,000 to support the Grass Roots Jr. Golf Charity Challenge.  9 foursomes played for a charity purse to benefit their charity.

September – Grass Roots Jr. Golf  begins a relationship with Puetz Golf Seattle to take in donated equipment from their surplus non-sales and customer trade in equipment.

November – TFT Regional Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada

January – Betty Russell (coach and friend to GRGF) passes away.

February – Jeff Cornish attends TFT National Meeting in San Jose, CA. 

May – Dan Smith attends TFT Coach Training Level 3 training in Nashville, TN.

Summer

June - GRGF/TFTSC Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $9,768.

June – Charity buys used Sprinter Van for program vehicle.

Tom Perry begins the Grass Roots Jr. Golf  Junior Tour Series

Everett G & CC and Mill Creek CC both rent the charity’s 1970 Volkswagen Bus for a sixties theme party.

Winter

December – Board agrees to develop a “contractor agreement” for Executive Director job.

Shirley Lions donates 1984 Saab Turbo to charity on behalf of her late husband, an avid golfer at Lynnwood Golf Course

GRGF is approved by TFT to rename as TFT North Puget Sound; and program in Skagit/Whatcom/Island Counties.  This is the only way GRGF can hope to achieve TFT Phase 4 delivery headcount.

February – Jeff Cornish begins to consult with Greater Trinity Academy about a Celebrity Golf Outing.

Jeff Cornish meets group in Bellingham and trains Tony Dear to deliver classes at North Bellingham GC.

Jeff Cornish and Dave train Bill Shea and his staff to deliver The First Tee classes at Dungeness GC.  The training agreement is paid by the Jefferson Tribe.

Jeff Cornish and Dave train Phil Gaggero to deliver The First Tee classes at Lake Padden GC.

March – Jeff Cornish signs contractor Administration Agreement with Vaughan Seifert (President).

Spring

Summer

Grass Roots Jr. Golf  continues to conduct the The First Tee Military Affiliate Program at Everett and Whidbey Island.

June - Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $7,429.

June - Jeff Cornish provides a 4-day clinic to over 50 local teachers with the summer education program.

Tom continues to run the Junior Tournament Series.

Meetings are held at Everett Golf & CC (charity becomes a Social Member).

December – Holiday Lunch with the Pros on December 29, 2010 raised a net total of $2,000.

January –The State Patrol partners with Grass Roots Jr. Golf to investigate Hole-in-One insurance fraud happening in the region.

February – Jeff Cornish attends The First Tee national meeting in San Antonio.

May – Jeff Cornish, Dave Reynaud, and Cori Erickson help deliver a The First Tee Level 1 coaches training in Seattle.

Military Affiliate Programs continue at Everett (Battle Creek Golf Course) and Naval Base Whidbey (Gallery Golf Course)

Tom Perry continues Grass Roots Jr. Golf  Junior Tour Series.

Summer

Dave Boivin begins his The First Tee Level 1 training.

June - Annual Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $11,313.

Grass Roots Jr. Golf signs a  3-year contact with Everett Golf & CC to provide The First Tee program to their youth membership and coach training to their adult volunteers.

January – Two month program working with Dave Boivin to offer high school coaches training at Kayak Point.

February – Grass Roots Jr. Golf  works at Seattle Golf Show (John Tipping) to provide a youth activity area.

March – Jeff Cornish attends The First Tee Regional Meeting in Phoenix.  Major topic is the National Schools Program.

The First Tee rolls out Phase 4 of their Strategic Plan: “To impact an additional 10 million kids by 2017”.

Spring

Affiliate Program at Lake Padden is tried but does not persist with Luke Bennett.

Tom Perry continues leading the Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation Junior Tour

May – The first Watson Trust donation to Grass Roots Jr. Golf is received.

June – Jeff Cornish provides golf portion of The First Green program at Everett G & CC complimentary.

June - Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $13,637.

Winter

February – Jeff Cornish invited to the Evans Caddy Scholarship selection meeting.  Former student Francesca O’Malley is one of 5 students chosen for the full ride scholarship at U of W.

Summer

The First Tee Military Affiliate Program continues to be conducted by Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation.

The First Tee programming continues in North Puget Sound.

June - Jeff Cornish provides golf portion of The First Green program at Everett G & CC complimentary.  Over 60 students attend from Lowell Elementary school.

June – Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $12,156.

August – GRGF contracts with Northshore YMCA to conduct youth golf specialty camp at Kenwanda.

Winter

November – TFT National informs TFTNPS of desired, increased performance benchmarks in a formal letter related to The First Tee phase 5 service targets. Charity disagrees that any of its activities or results are out of compliance with any chapter licensing rules, and that the Grass Roots Jr. Golf mission is beginning to not be in alignment with the new strategies of The First Tee.

November – Grass Roots Jr. Golf  partners with Kevin McKay at Super Range to set up a hitting station and  forms a partnership with Super Range for 50/50 split of sales of donated clubs from Grass Roots Jr. Golf.

November – TFT National mandates DonorSnap and charity begins to use that CRM software.

December – Meeting in Bellingham with Tony Dear and other locals to re-launch The First Tee North Puget Sound  program in Whatcom County.

December – Vaughan and Jeff meet with The First Tee regional director.  She wants Grass Roots Jr. Golf to delivering (at least) 5 National Schools Program sites and that the chapter have a full time Executive Director.   

December – Jeff Cornish and Dave Boivin meet with Monty Koch, PGA HQ to discuss the new initiative:

  • PGA Jr. League program.
  • The Board and organizations begins to shift in how we see ourselves; “we are Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation, an independent 501c3 that also is a licensed chapter of The First Tee.
    • We adopt a guiding principle of not “out programming our resources”. 
    • We create a new mission statement: – “ To benefit youth and families with affordable golf learning programs which enrich lives”.   that positively impact character development”. 
    • We create the acronym G.O.L.F. to frame our strategic plan
      •  (Governance, Operations, Leadership, Finances).

Winter

February – “Hole in Won” scammer put on trial and found guilty felony fraud.  Grass Roots Jr. Golf winner received partial compensation for 2010 prize.

Spring

March – Vaughan Siefert and Jeff Cornish attend TFT Regional meeting in Portland, Oregon

March - Jeff Cornish pilots “Sea to Tee” event on March 29, 2014 with 30 participants.

Grass Roots Jr. Golf  with Jeff Cornish and Brent Webber as coaches deliver 6 week in schools program at local middle school through that school’s PE department.

Jeff Cornish trains Tony Dear to deliver The First Tee Par classes at North Bellingham.

Dave and Jeff Cornish form 2 PGA Junior League teams.  Other 2 teams are HP, and Everett G & CC.

March – creation of annual fundraising tournament committee. Vaughan, Pam, Kathy, Karen, Don, Tracy Ariana

Tony Dear offers TFT Par level classes at North Bellingham.

Tom Perry continues managing GRGF Junior Tour events with 10 events totaling 164 rounds.

June 7 – The Board enters a 90 period of tracking and reporting finances to review financial reporting and policies.

Summer

June – Jeff Cornish provides golf portion of The First Green program at Everett G & CC complimentary.

June – GRGF/TFTSC Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $15,135.

July – Jeff Cornish volunteers to help with TFT National with judging the Pebble Beach student applicants.

July – Jeff Cornish attends the Mac Strong fundraising tournament to glean best practices.

July – ABC (Builders Association) select GRGF as beneficiary of annual event at Harbour Pointe and net donation totals $3,000.

July – Jay Fiske hosts tournament committee meeting at Bear Creek CC.

August – TFT National “audits” our program delivery with a site visit by TFT Master Coach Colleen Henry.  The audit show a good delivery of The First Tee Life Skills Experience classes.

Summer

The First Tee Military Affiliate Program ends.  Payments are made and final project  numbers reported.

The First Tee introduces matching grant funds for chapters based on donor growth numbers.

August – Grass Roots Jr. Golf provides a camp to Northshore YMCA group at Kenwanda.

Fall

Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation begins first Fall League Program with 7 events.

October 24- The First Tee sends Grass Roots Jr. Golf a letter listing service delivery targets by February.  The Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation Board disagrees that those targets fit the mission of the charity.  It is determined that the mission of The First Tee, and the expectations on chapters, has changed significantly since the origination of the chapter license agreement with Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation 10 years ago.

Lynnwood Golf Course becomes a Premier Golf Management site

November – Vaughan Siefert and Jeff Cornish consult with local attorney regarding The First Tee National letter and possible next actions for Grass Roots Jr. Golf.

December – Board Decides to not spend money to pursue any sort of legal challenge with The First Tee National related to our disagreement about the terms of their recent letter and The First Tee chapter license agreement.

January – Jeff Cornish meets with Tyler Johnson, WJGA executive to discuss collaboration.

January - Jeff Cornish meets with Premier Junior Golf Seattle chapter to discuss collaboration. 

January - Jeff Cornish meets with Steve Levy, Clubhouse (indoor ) Golf to discuss collaboration.

February – GRGF formally released from license agreement with TFT National.

February – GRGF has booth at Seattle Golf Show (Feb 28 & 29) with bold, new GRGF branding and PR

Spring

Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundaiton provides donors and supporters explanation that all future resources will focus on local kids only

Jeff Cornish develops program curriculum unique to Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation called "G.O.L.F. E. R." and "I.M.P.A.C.T."

March - “Sea to Tee” event successfully completes with 50 participants.

April – Jeff Cornish meets with PNGA executive Troy Andrew about how to structure the Grass Roots Jr. Golf  Education Grants in a way that complies with USGA amateur status rules.

PGA Junior League has 4 teams in league, 2 sponsored by Grass Roots Jr. Golf.

Tom Perry schedules 8 Grass Roots Jr. Golf Junior Tour events which generate 124 rounds.

Summer

June – GRGF sponsors free golf portion for 60 kids of The First Green program at Everett G & CC.

June - GRGF Fundraising Tournament at Everett Golf & Country Club raised a net total of $12,828.

July –  GRGF Jeff Cornish and Jay Fiske volunteer to be in dunk tank at Bear Creek CC family July 4th party.

July - ABC (Builders Association) select GRGF as beneficiary of annual event at Druids Glen and net donation totals $2,500.

September - GRGF Fall Junior League conducts 6 events.

September – GRGF Jeff Cornish provides 6 week golf program to Lighthouse private school students.

Jeff Cornish meets with Mary’s Place board to discuss partnership.

October – 3 year paid contract with Everett Golf & CC expires.

2016

Winter

January – Jeff Cornish has lunch with Barbara Tracy, Board President of the WSGA.

January - USGA approves the GRGF Education Grant model and assures it complies with the USGA Amateur Status Rules.

March – GRGF gives free golf camp to local Cub Scouts troop.

March - “Sea to Tee” event successfully completes with 35 participants.

March – GRGF contracts with ADP to process payroll, taxes, etc.

Spring

Junior League program has 6 total teams, Grass Roots Jr. Golf Foundation forms 2 teams with 23 players.

Tom Perry continues GRGF Junior Tour with 8 events that generate a total of 127 rounds.

Summer

Grass Roots Jr. Golf  partners with Mary’s Place for outreach program with 14 kids at Battle Creek.

June – Spencer Raub receives the first ever Grass Roots Jr. Golf Education Grant Award ($500).

June - GRGF Fundraising Tournament at Bear Creek CC raised a net total of $21,500.  Brian Haggard gets a hole in one and chooses the $25,000 prize.

July - ABC (Builders Association) again, selects Grass Roots Jr. Golf as beneficiary of annual event at Oakbrook CC and net donation totals $2,500.

July – Vaughan Seifert, Jeff Cornish, Kalan Smith, Ryan Karsen, Dave Boivin and 3 GPHS students, representing Grass Roots Jr. Golf , play in Greater Trinity Academy event.

August –Northshore YMCA returns to Grass Roots Jr. Golf for its golf camp (after trying a different vendor for 1 year.)

Fall
